A world where great packaging never becomes waste.
At Britvic we are taking proactive steps to reduce the environmental impact of plastic packaging and future-proofing ‘beyond plastic’. Packaging is integral to Britvic's products and we have a responsibility to ensure its environmental impact is minimised throughout its lifecycle. We want to bring about a world where we keep packaging in the economy and out of the environment.
All our packaging and advertising have prominent messages encouraging consumers to recycle. Find out more about different kinds of packaging and where it can be recycled.
At Britvic we recognise the importance of reducing the environmental impact of plastic packaging and becoming a key player in the circular economy.
In 2020, alongside PepsiCo, we committed to moving all bottles made in Great Britain to 100% recycled plastic (rPET), surpassing our previous target of 50% rPET by 2025.
This ambition builds on the £5m investment support package we provided to Esterform Packaging Limited in 2019 for the construction of an rPET manufacturing facility – providing Britvic with the quality and quantity of rPET it needs to bring about a circular economy.
Deposit Return Schemes are used as a way of encouraging more people to recycle their drinks. They work by charging anyone who buys a drink a small deposit per container. They get this money back when they return the container to a collection point to be recycled.
A well-designed DRS will address several packaging waste issues and has been found to improve recycling quantity, improve recycling quality and encourage wider behaviour change around waste, and supports the transition to a circular economy – by using recycled materials repeatedly.
Britvic remains committed to an industry-led, not for profit and GB-wide DRS to increase recycling levels.
A key tenet of our packaging transformation plan is to provide consumers and customers with solutions Beyond the Bottle when they are on the go, at work, and in bars and food outlets. We are focused on developing new technologies that offer sustainable hydration while helping reduce the use of plastic.
A major milestone in this ambition is Aqua Libra Co.
Britvic is a founding signatory of The UK Plastics Pact. The Pact is a pioneering agreement to transform the plastic packaging system in the UK and keep plastic in the economy and out of the environment. The Pact brings together manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, non-governmental organisations and the UK government in a unique and bold collaboration to tackle the growing issue of plastic waste.
The Pact’s members have committed to four ambitious targets by 2025:
- Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse) delivery model.
- 100% of plastics packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
- 70% of plastics packaging effectively recycled or composted.
- 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.
Through this Pact, we are engaging with partners across the full plastic value chain to play our part in creating a circular economy for plastics and a healthier planet.
Building on our existing work to protect the environment, we’ve joined forces with other global businesses to promote a ground-breaking recycling technology that aims to bring about a circular economy for plastics.
The new INEOS Infinia technology uses chemicals rather than machines to break down plastics, meaning difficult to recycle packaging can be made into new plastic again and again, with no loss in quality.
