Careers Inspiration Student Event
Britvic have a strong history of supporting schools and colleges through a variety of successful projects. Working in partnership with Beacon East, this latest project provides opportunities for post-16 students to visit Britvic sites supporting careers and either the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) or Marketing & Business curriculum. Earlier this year post-16 engineering students from the University Technical College Norfolk (UTCN) visited Britvic Norwich site to learn about job roles and careers in STEM. This event provided an invaluable chance for UTCN students to gain real life experience of the 'world of work'. The event programme included:
- Overview and history of Britvic
- Tour of the site and factory
- Opportunity to meet staff an learn about key roles at each site
- Interactive activities supporting both careers and the STEM curriculum
- Learn about careers opportunities with Britvic and the soft drinks industry
This event had a mix of inspirational presentations, audio-visuals, tours, problem solving and fun activities. The morning session focused on the company, employability skills and careers. This not only provided information on company opportunities but practical advice on key employability skills such as applying on line, CVs and 'developing your own brand'. Students also learnt about the Britvic apprenticeship scheme and met current apprentices, who were very inspirational. They had attended local Norwich schools and were very passionate about their work at Britvic. Before lunch there was an extensive tour of the factory. Students had to wear PPE, which added to the true 'world of work' experience. The tour highlighted the vast array of cutting edge engineering involved to produce millions of litres of drinks each week across the Britvic factories. After a working lunch, the afternoon session focused on STEM roles. The group was split into three smaller groups to work on activities and allow for more dialogue on the roles. This also included fun hands on activities such as smell testing, an unknown but very important role in the company. They also met people with unusual, inspirational and exciting roles e.g. global source manager who travels the world seeking the most ethically sourced products for Britvic. At the end of the event, the students left with job profile packs and resources for the classroom.
"We created these career inspiration days as an evolution to our Enterprise programme previously run for teachers and disadvantaged students. Teachers had told us 'Career Advice' had gone back on the curriculum and help from employers would be appreciated. Having now run our first sessions we can see they are hugely beneficial to students".
Lauretta Lamont, CSR Manager at Britvic
"The students have really enjoyed today. I think the fact it was in the working environment rather than a school visitor gave them the opportunity to see first hand how a large organisation like Britvic operates. It has definitely raised their aspirations and motivated them into thinking about different STEM career options."
Mark Bruhin, Beacon East & National Careers Service
"The Britvic event was a great day for our sixth form students, with a good balance of careers info and hands on STEM examples from the workplace. Student feedback was very positive. Thank you."
